Finer Womanhood

March 7, 2015

Although the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Systems is one of the state’s richest, it still serves a significant number of at-risk students. These students have a variety of needs—financial, self-esteem, cognitive, etc. With this in mind, Blue Ribbon has created a comprehensive support program for such students. This program provides a variety of services to said population--mentoring, tutoring, advocacy, enrichment, leadership, training, and other pertinent support services. This year, Eta Phi Zeta and Blue Ribbon have partnered together for the second consecutive year to host an all-day retreat on March 7, 2015 for at-risk middle and high school girls in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School System. Forty such ladies attended this event and were exposed to the following topics:

  • Identifying signs of domestic violence

  • Coping with domestic violence

  • Coping with bullying

  • Practicing healthy sexual behaviors

  • Coping with mental health challenges

  • Practicing forgiveness

Needless to say, we hope that this even provided attendees with the skills needed to be successful in the future.

*Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate (BRMA) is a comprehensive support program for students in the Chapel Hill- Carrboro City Schools. BRMA provides students with mentoring, tutoring, advocacy, enrichment, leadership training, and scholarship support services.
